The Lloydminster Regional Archives preserves the stories, records and experiences that have shaped Lloydminster and the surrounding region. As the collection continues to grow and the needs of the community evolve, the City of Lloydminster is exploring how the Archives can be structured to remain sustainable and accessible for generations to come.

Background

In 2020, the Lloydminster and District Centennial Commemorative Association (LDCCA) transferred ownership and operations of the Lloydminster Regional Archives to the City of Lloydminster.

Prior to the transfer, the LDCCA operated the Archives as a registered non-profit organization. From the late 1990s through 2019, the organization collected, preserved and made accessible the documentary history of Lloydminster and the surrounding region. The collection grew into a significant and robust community archive, supported by a dedicated board, staff and volunteers.

The transfer to the City provided greater long-term stability for the Archives and aligned its mandate with the City's existing museum and heritage operations.

Looking Ahead

Five years into City operations, the Archives is at a critical point in development.

The existing operating model has been built around a strong volunteer base and an active governing board that supported a small number of part-time staff. As the volunteer base declines, this model is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain. While staff are working to manage a growing collection the Lloydminster Museum + Archives are evolving beyond its traditional role as a community archive. As a municipal organization, there is an opportunity to develop a corporate archives function that can support the management and preservation of the City's historical records while continuing to serve the broader community.

Through this public engagement opportunity, the goal is to develop a sustainable framework for the Lloydminster Archives that can support operations for the next 20 years.

The City is considering how the Archives can:

• Continue preserving and providing access to the history of Lloydminster and the surrounding region
• Support the management and preservation of significant records
• Respond to the changing needs of researchers, residents and the community
• Develop sustainable staffing and volunteer support
• Manage the continued growth of physical and digital collections
• Address current and future storage needs
• Build a framework that supports the long-term sustainability of the Archives
