Wastewater treatment facilities are an essential infrastructure element to any municipality. Their purpose is to collect, treat wastewater and return manageable and clean water to the natural water system.

Wastewater is water which had been affected by humans. It is disposed of through sinks, toilets and drains of households, businesses or industrial processes. This water is collected within the storm and sewer systems and entered the wastewater treatment facility where contaminants are removed. After multiple steps of treatment, the water is returned to the North Saskatchewan River where it is used for municipal and recreational uses downstream.

Timelines

In 2017 the City Council passed the motion which officially named the wastewater treatment plant as the municipality's top infrastructure priority.

In 2019 the City initiated an integrated project delivery (IPD) team. This model will help ensure timelines are met and the budget is followed.

In 2020, the IPD team began planning the enhanced facility, which is expected to be completed in 2023.
